Cadet Unit History/Background

  • 1943

283 Squadron was formed on 23 June 1943 as “K” (Parkdale) Squadron. In 1960, the Squadron was re-designated 283 (Toronto) Squadron, until it stood down at Moss Park Armouries in January 1998. The Squadron was reformed in September 1999 in Woodbridge, under the sponsorship of MacKenzie Branch 414, Royal Canadian Legion. It now serves the entire City of Vaughan and adjacent areas of York Region.

  • 2012

In 2012, 283 official adopted the Merlin Falcon as its squadron mascot. The bird represents both the community and the aviation/aerospace community. The blue feather of the bird represents both the Italian and Ukrainian communities that have help build 283 over the past 70 years. The Merlin embodies the motto of “Supra Et Ultra – Above and Beyond” as not only being a bird but also the name used for the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine used in aircrafts of the Royal Air Force since October 1933 to present day.
